Ghost Ranch

Located between Abiquiú and Chama, Ghost Ranch is famous for its red cliffs, colorful badlands, and desert scenery which inspired many of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. Today, it operates as a Presbyterian retreat and education center while welcoming visitors to explore its hiking trails, museums, and scenic viewpoints.

Visitors can hike through the dramatic red rock formations, visit museums showcasing local fossils and the life of Georgia O’Keeffe, or simply enjoy the beautiful scenery. Ghost Ranch serves as an excellent stop when seeing Abiquiú, or the nearby Echo Amphitheater.

Hiking

Several well-marked trails begin from the ranch, ranging from easy walks to more serious climbs. The most popular route leads to Chimney Rock, where hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mesas and colorful cliffs. Other trails explore sandstone canyons, desert washes, and overlooks that showcase the unique geology of the Piedra Lumbre Basin.

Museums & History

Ghost Ranch is home to a small museum dedicated to Georgia O’Keeffe and another highlighting the area’s paleontological discoveries. Fossils found here include the famous Coelophysis, one of the earliest known dinosaurs, with thousands of specimens discovered nearby at Quarry Hill. The ranch also hosts educational programs, workshops, and guided tours throughout the year.
