Walatowa Slot Canyon

Walatowa Slot Canyon is a short red-rock canyon located on Jemez Pueblo land.

Hiking the Trail

The hike is a 1.5 mile loop and you’ll see layered red rock, desert vegetation, and views of the surrounding mesas. The striking red cliffs are among the most colorful formations in the state, with their red hue produced by iron oxides in the rock.

The Slot Canyon

The slot canyon is a short, narrow, passage carved into the red rock, creating a shaded retreat. Don’t expect to have to shimmy through tight spaces; the canyon is narrow but by no means constricting.

Visiting

Walatowa Slot Canyon is located on Jemez Pueblo tribal land and access is controlled by the Pueblo. Stop at the Walatowa Visitor Center to obtain a wristband and learn Jemez Pueblo history and culture. There are also food stalls near the visitor center where you can get native foods and snacks (fry bread, indian tacos, and more).

How Long Should You Stay?

Plan around one to two hours to hike the canyon and enjoy the scenery.

The canyon is easy to combine with Jemez Springs, Jemez Historic Site, Jemez Soda Dam, and other stops along NM 4.
