Valles Caldera Cross Country Ski Area

Terrain Overview

Valles Caldera offers cross-country skiing across the broad snow-covered meadows and forests of a volcanic caldera.

When conditions permit, approximately 12 miles of trails are groomed in Valle Grande, while skiers can also explore ungroomed routes throughout much of the preserve. The open valley floor provides relatively gentle terrain, while forested slopes offer deeper snow and more challenging conditions.

Facilities & Services

Valles Caldera is not a developed ski resort and has no chairlifts, ski lodge, or equipment rental operation.

The Volcano Discovery Center near Valle Grande provides visitor information, maps, and ranger assistance. Cross-country ski rentals are not available within the preserve, so visitors need to bring their own equipment.

Getting There

The main entrance to Valles Caldera National Preserve is located along NM 4 near mile marker 39.2, approximately 18 miles west of Los Alamos and 22 miles from Jemez Springs.

The primary winter skiing area is Valle Grande near the main entrance. Snow and ice are common on NM 4 during winter, so check road and preserve conditions before traveling.
