Spence Hot Springs

Spence Hot Springs is a small natural hot spring tucked into the forested hills of the Jemez Mountains.

The spring is part of the same geothermal system associated with the volcanic Jemez Mountains and Valles Caldera.

Visiting Spence Hot Springs

The springs are reached by a short hike from a parking area along NM-4. The trail crosses the San Antonio River before climbing to a series of small, rock-lined soaking pools overlooking the canyon.

Despite the name, the water is more warm than hot, staying around 95°F. The pools are also fairly small, so Spence can become crowded on busy weekends.

There are no facilities at the springs, and camping and campfires are prohibited around the pools. Because the water is untreated and unmonitored, avoid putting your head underwater or getting the spring water in your nose (brain eating amoeba).
