Sandia Pueblo (Tuf Shur Tia - Green Reed Place)

Located along the Rio Grande just north of Albuquerque is the Tiwa community of Sandia Pueblo. Established in the 1300s, Sandia Pueblo sits at the base of the Sandia Mountains, which remain central to the Pueblo’s identity, history, and homeland. Today, visitors are most likely to know Sandia Pueblo through Sandia Resort & Casino and the Sandia Golf Club.

Sandia Resort & Casino

Sandia Resort & Casino is one of the nicest resort properties in the Albuquerque area, with an Indian market, a large casino, golf, spa, all within a short drive of the city. One of the coolest parts is that Sandia Pueblo has bison roaming on pueblo land basically within Albuquerque’s metro area. For sunsets, the sports bar and resort patios are hard to beat, with east-facing views for seeing the Sandia Mountains light up.

Feast Days & Public Ceremonies

Some events may be open to visitors, while others are private, restricted to community members, or closed without notice. Access, schedules, and photography rules can change, so visitors should confirm directly with the Pueblo before attending.

• Easter Sunday — Various Dances
• June 13 — St. Anthony Feast Day
• December 24–28 — Christmas Dances (times and locations vary)

Visiting Respectfully

New Mexico’s pueblos are living communities, not museums. They are sovereign tribal nations with their own governments, laws, and traditions. When visiting, remember that you are a guest on tribal land.

• Obey all posted signs and respect areas marked as private or off-limits.
• Do not photograph people, homes, religious activities, or ceremonies without permission.
• During dances and ceremonies, remain quiet and avoid crossing ceremonial areas.
• Do not remove pottery shards, artifacts, plants, or other objects from pueblo lands (you will be cursed).
• Observe all posted speed limits and traffic laws. Going 5 mph over can get you a ticket.
