Rio Grande Gorge

The Rio Grande Gorge is an easy must-see stop near Taos, with sheer basalt cliffs, wide mesa views, and one of New Mexico’s most iconic landscapes. Located on US-64 about 10 miles northwest of town, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the main attraction, spanning a 600-foot drop to the river below. Park at the bridge rest area to see the gorge, walk to the overlook, and access trails along the rim. The bridge itself is currently closed to pedestrians due to suicide concerns, but the gorge is still easy to view from nearby rim trails. You will often find vendor booths at the rest area selling local crafts, jewelry, and food. This is a quick stop, usually 20–45 minutes, and pairs perfectly with the nearby Greater World Earthship Community or a drive across the mesa.
