Cerrillos Hills State Park

Cerrillos Hills State Park is a low-key stop on the Turquoise Trail. Located just outside the tiny village of Cerrillos, this small day-use park features desert hiking, old mining history, mountain views, and a quieter feel than nearby attractions like Madrid.

Hike the Trails

The main reason to visit Cerrillos Hills State Park is to walk the trails. The park is quite small, the entire trail system is only about 5 miles, and the trails are not too steep. There are some great views of the surrounding hills and the Galisteo Basin, and the trails are well-marked.

Look for Mining History

Cerrillos Hills is the oldest mining district west of the Mississippi River. The Spanish were mining Galena (silver/lead alloy) early in the 1600s, and native Americans were mining in the area long before that. During the 1800s, there was a mining boom in the area, and the Cerrillos Hills were home to many small mines. The area is rich in history, and you can see remnants of old mine shafts and prospect areas along the trails.

Mountain Biking and Horseback Riding

The park is also open to mountain biking and horseback riding. The trails are shared-use, so stay alert and yield appropriately. If horses are passing, step off the trail on the downhill side and make sure the rider can see you.

Stop by the Visitor Center

The visitor center is located in the village of Cerrillos. It has park information, maps, exhibits, restrooms, and a small gift shop managed by the Amigos de Cerrillos Hills State Park. It is usually open on weekends, with other hours by appointment. You may as well take a ten minutes walk around Cerrillos as well, its a quaint village with a nice church and some restaurants.
