Visit the Madrid Old Coal Town Museum

Located in one of Madrid’s original buildings, the museum tells the story of the town’s rise, decline, and revival. Once a booming coal mining community supplying the Santa Fe Railroad, Madrid first became famous for its spectacular Christmas light displays in the 1920s and 1930s. After the mines closed and the town was nearly abandoned in 1961, artists gradually transformed it into the vibrant community it is today. Inside the museum, you’ll find historic photographs, mining equipment, and artifacts that bring this fascinating history to life.
