Wheeler Peak

At 13,161 feet, Wheeler Peak is the highest point in New Mexico and one of the most rewarding high-elevation hikes in the state. The summit offers huge panoramic views across northern New Mexico and a rare chance to stand above treeline in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The standard route begins near Taos Ski Valley by following the Williams Lake Trail for about 2 miles, then continuing another 2 miles up the Wheeler Peak Summit Trail. The climb gains roughly 2,000 feet from the lake area to the summit, with rocky terrain, strong wind, and snow that can linger into summer. This is a serious mountain hike, even though the trail is well maintained and well marked. If you have around 6 hours, are in good shape, and want a true alpine New Mexico experience, Wheeler Peak is one of the best day hikes in the state.
