Truth Or Consequences Hot Springs District

The Hot Springs District is a compact collection of historic bathhouses, galleries, and small businesses in downtown Truth or Consequences. The district sits directly above the town’s geothermal aquifer and is the center of its hot-spring culture. Notably, the springs are low in sulfur, which makes them more pleasant to soak in than many other hot springs in New Mexico.

Take a Mineral-Water Soak

Several bathhouses throughout the district offer hourly access to private tubs, communal pools, and outdoor soaking areas. Options range from simple historic bathhouses to modern riverside resorts overlooking the Rio Grande. The hot springs get busier as it gets colder, but the district is open year-round. You do not need to book a hotel room to soak, although advance reservations are recommended on weekends.

Explore the District

The district is small enough to explore on foot and encompasses a lot of downtown. Historic bathhouses and old motor courts are mixed among galleries, cafés, antique stores, and other independent businesses. The buildings are generally modest, but they preserve much of the character of the early health-resort district.

History

The area developed during the early 1900s as visitors traveled to soak in the local mineral water. By 1940, the town had 19 bathhouses and massage businesses, along with dozens of hotels, cottages, and rooming houses. The 56-acre Hot Springs Bathhouse and Commercial Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
