Ski Apache

Terrain Overview

Ski Apache is the largest ski area in southern New Mexico, with 55 runs spread across more than 750 acres on the slopes of Sierra Blanca. The mountain has terrain for all skill levels, with about 20% beginner, 60% intermediate, and 20% expert terrain. Its 1,900-foot vertical drop and high elevation make it a substantial ski mountain this far south. The biggest draw is the setting, with views stretching from the forested Sacramento Mountains across the desert below. Ski Apache is owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe and is also home to New Mexico’s only eight-passenger gondola.

Facilities & Services

The base area includes ski and snowboard rentals, lessons, dining, a ski shop, and other basic services. Equipment can also be rented from the Ski Apache Ski Shop in Ruidoso before driving up the mountain. There is no major lodging complex at the ski area itself, but Ruidoso has a large selection of hotels and cabins, while the nearby Inn of the Mountain Gods is also owned by the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Lift tickets and rentals should be purchased or reserved ahead of time when possible.

Getting There

Ski Apache is located in the Sierra Blanca Mountains about 17 miles from Ruidoso. From Ruidoso, follow NM 48 north toward Alto and turn onto Ski Run Road, which climbs directly to the resort. The drive takes around 40 minutes and becomes steep and winding as it climbs into the mountains, so check road and weather conditions before heading up in winter.
