The Lordsburg Door: New Mexico’s Interdimensional Portal

Outside the small town of Lordsburg, somewhere in the sandy hills and dry washes of southwestern New Mexico, local stories describe something beyond comprehension.

It is called the Lordsburg Door.

According to stories, the Door is a naturally occurring portal between dimensions, a place where the normal boundaries between space and time break down. UFOs, enormous flying creatures, strange beings, displaced animals, and even people from the past have all been connected to it.

Ramón Ortiz and Origins of the Door

Ramón Ortiz is one of the main figures responsible for the modern Lordsburg Door story.

A Lordsburg-area UFO investigator, Ortiz spent years observing and documenting unusual aerial activity around southwestern New Mexico and later shared detailed accounts of the Door with writer Mike Smith.

Many of the legend’s best-known details—including its location, appearance, the strange creatures associated with it, and the claim that several similar portals exist in the region—come from Ortiz’s accounts.

Ortiz was not the only source for the legend, however. During a 2007 investigation, Rob Feightner spoke with a Hidalgo County resident who said local ranchers had already told stories about a mysterious portal near Lordsburg, suggesting that the legend circulated more broadly in the area than Ortiz’s accounts alone.

Where Is the Lordsburg Door?

Ortiz placed the Door in Gold Gulch, near mile marker 17 on New Mexico Highway 90, the highway leading north from Lordsburg toward Silver City. A separate account collected from Hidalgo County residents in 2007 placed the portal in an isolated area south of Lordsburg. Later discussions have also associated the story with the Gold Hill area and dirt roads east of Highway 90. There are no universally agreed-upon set of coordinates but it is in the general vicinity of Lordsburg, New Mexico.

What Does the Door Look Like?

Ramón Ortiz described the Lordsburg Door as glowing a brilliant red, comparing it to the burning bush in the story of Moses. The portal is not said to remain visible all the time and may only appear under certain circumstances.

Several unusual landmarks have also been associated with the site, including a chair and table carved from rock and an old tree stump said to contain a human leg bone. According to the story, someone passing through the Door materialized partially inside the tree, leaving part of their body fused with it.

Strange Glyphs

Stories about the Door also mention unusual symbols found around Gold Gulch.

Some visitors have reported glyphs that they believed looked different from other markings in the region, including one resembling an Egyptian ankh. A treasure hunter writing about the area in 2015 also claimed to have seen an old copper sheet bearing similar symbols. These stories have become mixed with older treasure and mining legends around Gold Gulch and Gold Hill.

Cattle Teleportation

One of the stranger Lordsburg Door stories involves cattle disappearing from ranches around Hidalgo County.

In 2007, researcher Rob Feightner spoke with a local resident who said ranchers had reported valuable hybrid cattle vanishing and later being replaced by lower-quality cattle believed to have come from Mexico. The story suggested that the animals were not being stolen, but were somehow passing through the Door in both directions.

UFOs Over Lordsburg

The Lordsburg Door has also become closely connected with UFO activity in the surrounding desert.

In September 2000, two travelers driving between Lordsburg and Deming reported seeing a metallic-looking object hovering south of Interstate 10. They watched it for more than an hour and eventually drove several miles into the desert trying to get closer. Despite following for several miles, the object did not seem to become much larger and remained difficult to reach. The sighting was later recorded by the National UFO Reporting Center.

Ramón Ortiz and paranormal researcher Benjie Medina have also spent years photographing and recording unusual objects around Lordsburg. Reports described lights or objects that hovered, moved rapidly, changed shape, flashed, or split into multiple objects. Ortiz later reported frequent UFO activity around Pyramid Mountain.

Within the Lordsburg Door story, these repeated sightings are often interpreted as activity around the portal itself, with UFOs believed to be entering or leaving through the Door.

Pterosaurs and Giant Birds

Large flying creatures are another part of the Lordsburg Door story.

Witnesses and later writers have described animals resembling pterosaurs, pterodactyls, or enormous birds in southern New Mexico. The connection to the Door comes from the idea that the portal may cross not only space, but time. If that is the case, creatures from the distant past could theoretically appear in the present.

New Mexico Magazine has even mentioned the portal while discussing reports of pteranodon-like creatures in Hidalgo County.

What Is Said to Come Through?

There are many other claims of things passing through the Lordsburg Door.

The full list of claimed phenomena includes:

• Pterosaur-like flying creatures
• Large or translucent humanoid figures
• Shadowy beings
• UFOs
• Animals far from where they originated
• Apparitions connected with other periods of history

One story even claims that the spirit of Geronimo appeared near the Door.

The common idea is that the portal may connect different places, different times, or entirely different realities.

How Does the Door Open?

According to Ortiz, simply reaching the correct location does not guarantee that someone will see the Door.

He claimed that the portal only reveals itself to people who are “wanted there.” Ortiz also said the Door could be opened using a burnt offering made peacefully and closed using a sword. Exactly how the process was supposed to work is never clearly explained.

There May Be More Than One Door

Ortiz claimed that the Lordsburg Door was only one of several portals in southwestern New Mexico.

According to his account, seven similar doors existed throughout the region and the Bootheel. He believed these portals were ultimately connected with Heaven. He also described twelve blue gates associated with Hell and claimed another portal existed in his own basement. While Ortiz provides the bulk of the information about these portals, it’s dubious how much of it is verifiable.

Searching for the Lordsburg Door

One of the better documented attempts to find the Door took place in 2007.

Albuquerque economist and blogger Rob Feightner traveled to Lordsburg and Silver City after reading about the portal in Mike Smith’s My Strange New Mexico. A Hidalgo County resident told him that ranchers had heard stories about the Door but believed it was somewhere south of Lordsburg. In Silver City, another man said he knew someone who knew a Sufi practitioner who had supposedly visited it.

Feightner never found a definite location, but his search helped spread the Lordsburg Door story online.

Gold Gulch

Gold Gulch remains the location most commonly associated with the Door.

The area lies northeast of Lordsburg in the foothills of the Burro Mountains and consists of washes, rocky hills, old mining areas, and scattered dirt roads. People searching the area have also reported unusual glyphs, possible man-made features, mining ruins, and stories of underground tunnels.

Can You Actually Visit the Lordsburg Door?

Whether there is really a doorway between dimensions outside Lordsburg remains unknown. But the repeated UFO sightings, local stories, unusual encounters, and people who have gone searching for the Door suggest that the legend is based on some real weirdness. Whatever is happening in the desert around Lordsburg, the Door remains one of New Mexico’s strangest unsolved mysteries.
