Geometric Center of New Mexico

There are two commonly cited “centers” of New Mexico. The geographic center is based on the state’s actual land area and sits southwest of Willard (34.4381° N, 106.1122° W) in a remote, unmarked area with not much to see. The geometric center is based on the state’s overall shape, and it’s the one most visitors go to. Located on the private 7 Up 7 Down Ranch, the geometric center is marked by a small monument with a flagpole, a New Mexico-shaped base, a bench, a time capsule, and a logbook. The ranch owners allows visitors to access the site, but this is still an active ranch, so expect gates, cattle, dirt roads, and private property rules. If the drive in gate is closed, you can park there, and there is a small gate that allows for access to the site. It’s not a major attraction, but the Center of New Mexico is a fun detour for road-trippers, map nerds, geocachers, and anyone who likes odd places!
