Fox Cave is a strange roadside stop that feels right at home in New Mexico.
Located along US 70 east of Ruidoso Downs, the attraction is built into a hill and has spent decades catching the attention of travelers driving between Roswell and the Ruidoso area. Today, the property operates as Weed World at Fox Cave, combining the old roadside attraction with a weed shop.
What Is Fox Cave?
Fox Cave developed into a classic New Mexico roadside attraction, complete with a curio shop, unusual sculptures, Western memorabilia, and rooms tucked against the natural rock. Sources date the roadside attraction to around the 1950s.
The appeal was simply how strange the place was. Giant statues stood outside, while the interior included collections of Old West artifacts and memorabilia associated with Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett. Legend has it that Billy the Kid used the cave as a hideout.

Fox Cave Today
Fox Cave has changed quite a bit from the old-fashioned tourist attraction that many New Mexicans remember. The property is now known as Weed World at Fox Cave and operates as a weed shop. While it still has some of the old roadside attraction elements, the focus is now on cannabis products and related merchandise. I personally don’t smoke so I spent about 7 minutes wandering around before leaving.
